I am using one and then a monthly project based on their reading. Their reading will count as a homework grade. I think one of the best ways to become fluent in reading and comprehension is to practice, practice, practice!

My fourth graders are to read 60 minutes a week outside of school. They log it on a paper that is checked weekly. Those students who meet the goal each week for the nine weeks get an award that nine weeks.

Yes, they need to read at least 20 minutes a night and write a response. Usually a summary. They do separate book reports based on chapter books.

I started one this year they have to read 20 minutes a night or 3 hours a week. I give a grade for it and the parent's have to sign it. I have found that it isn't working out for me though because the parents are signing them over the weekend before the kids have even read anything. This is a reality in my school though.
