I'd like a new one

I typically use "Close the barbecue, close the sun..."by Prince Redcloud.

Are you wanting a poem to read to the kids or poem ideas for the kids to write?

I'm planning to have mine do the "I Am" poem that I found on a teacher's website this summer. I love teachers who share their ides!

Not exactly about school starting but has possibilities.

The Other Side of the Door
by Jeff Moss

On the other side of the door
I can be a different me,
As smart and as brave and as funny or strong
As a person could want to be.
There's nothing too hard for me to do,
There’s no place I can't explore
Because everything can happen
On the other side of the door.

On the other side of the door
I don't have to go alone.
If you come, too, we can sail ships
And fly where the wind has flown.
And wherever we go, it is almost sure
Well find what we're looking for
Because everything can happen
On the other side of the door.

Here is the form for the I Am poem: (with examples of how it works)

I am ....... a happy fourth grader
I wonder ...... if I will have a lot of friends this year
I hear ...... kids laughing at recess
I see ...... lots of interesting things to see in the classroom
I want ..... to spend all day doing art
I am (repeat the first line) ...... a happy fourth grader

I pretend
I feel
I touch
I worry
I cry
I am (repeat the first line)

I understand
I say
I dream
I try
I hope
I am (repeat the first line)

Whatif by Shel Silverstein
Last night, while I lay thinking here,
some Whatifs crawled inside my ear
and pranced and partied all night long
and sang their same old Whatif song:
Whatif I'm dumb in school?
Whatif they've closed the swimming pool?
Whatif I get beat up?
Whatif there's poison in my cup?
Whatif I start to cry?
Whatif I get sick and die?
Whatif I flunk that test?
Whatif green hair grows on my chest?
Whatif nobody likes me?
Whatif a bolt of lightning strikes me?
Whatif I don't grow talle?
Whatif my head starts getting smaller?
Whatif the fish won't bite?
Whatif the wind tears up my kite?
Whatif they start a war?
Whatif my parents get divorced?
Whatif the bus is late?
Whatif my teeth don't grow in straight?
Whatif I tear my pants?
Whatif I never learn to dance?
Everything seems well, and then
the nighttime Whatifs strike again!

Also, this was in my bookmarks: http://www.canteach.ca/elementary/songspoems5.html

Someone else posted a different "What If" poem that was directly related to school. I'm sure someone will post that, too.

Great poems

This year I really want to use more poetry. These poems are great. I was thinking of having the kids start a poetry journal. Has anyone used these? Do you introduce a new poem every week? Is it on a chart? handout? both? What kinds of activities do you do with the poems?

Thanks again for the great poems!

What's in the Sack? by Shel Silverstein
Old 07-23-2008, 08:43 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #13

I always read this poem on the first day, and then I bring a sack full of stuff to introduce myself to my kids...an angel from my willow tree angel collection, my favorite book I read everyday (my bible), my favorite book on their level, a couple of pics of my family and I, music, because i love to play piano and sing, etc....then for the first day homework, I give them each a paper sack to decorate (stuff that relates to them and who they are), then they have to return the next day with 1-2 items that tell who they are....this is a way to get to know one another better...I have done it all 5 years that I have taught, and my kiddos love it.

I like to use the poem If I Were in Charge of the World by Judith Viorst. We read it together and discuss it. Then, I put up a copy of the poem and leave out a lot of the words. Then I have my kids fill in the blanks to tell what they would do if they were in charge of the world. They turn out so cute and some of the are very humorous.

If you google the poem title you can find a copy of the poem and some activities to do with the poem.

I love this idea!!! I was trying to think of something to grasp their attention. A mystery sack filled to the brim is sure to help. I was considering hanging things around the room that relate to me...but I think I like that the sack idea relates to a poem too!
