Weekly Reader or Time for Kids?

I'm setting up a project on Donors Choose for a current events magazine subscription for my 4th graders. I've used Weekly Reader previously in kindergarten and thought it was okay. If you've had experience with both these magazines, which do you prefer?

I had WR funded through DonorsChoose a couple years ago. It was just ok.... I actually prefer Scholastic News, but since that's not an option through DC I'd go for TFK.

What grade do you teach?

I love Time For Kids, but I have never read through Weekly Reader so I can't compare. I used to teach 6th grade and I find there are so many ways to integrate the Time for Kids into all areas of the curriculum. I love the Power Words, debates, political cartoons, and activities to extend the topics. I now teach 4th grade and still plan on incorporating the above-they just do everything slower so it is hard to fit it all in my time slot.

Hope this helps a bit.

I love TFK and I love that I can print up a comprehension worksheet on the cover story or the entire magazine. It has helped my students become more focused in their reading. Also, I like to addition blackline masters that they send in the teacher's guide.

I've only ever used Time for Kids with my students. They usually love it, and it leads to some interesting class discussions.

Interestingly enough, some of my students this year groaned when I mentioned TFK. I did a little digging and discovered that the previous year's teacher had really killed them with TFK-related worksheets. So I took that as a word to the wise: go easy on the worksheets and just enjoy the reading and discussion.

Weekly Reader use

We use Weekly Reader and the articles are up-to-date with current events. Our fourth grade team is discouraged though, with how students do on the back page of questions. Is this typical in 4th grade where it's a Gr 4-6?

My 4th graders do not perform very well on the back page either. But I love using WR to teach locate, select, and synthesize information resources.
