How often are you ID'd when using your credit/debit card?

So, in light of all the events that happened yesterday, it got me thinking: I am usually not asked to show id when I use my debit card or credit card. I guess with the debit card, if you use your pin number, people assume it's you. However, the a***hole who stole my purse and bought themselves a nice new tv used my debit card as credit and was not asked to show any form of id. Every once in awhile, I am asked but very rarely; especially in Wal-Mart and Target. I think Target might actually be worse. My credit card is/was still in my maiden name, and even when I am asked to show id they look at it and say ok (DL is in married name).
I just wonder how much prevention there would be if employees took the time to ask for id when you use a credit or debit card.

It's to the point where I am surprised if they DO ask...
Restaurants are pretty bad, Grocery Store too. Pretty much Denny's I can count on being asked even though the waiter knows me (when it is not the waiter I know, I'm not always asked). NEVER at Gas Stations, those are probably the easiest places to use someone's card. Safeway used to ask for my zip but the last few times they haven't even done that!
I was trying to think of someplace that was consistently good but I can't! That's sad.

When you sign the back of your card, write "see id". They will check it.

My debit card actually has my photo on it, so I don't get asked. I do not use my credit card for in-store purchases, only online.

About 20% of the time.
I have "ASK for I.D." written on mine. Often I will have I.D. out and the clerk just gives me a strange look.

I've always been told to NOT sign your name on the back of your card. When I go to the bank today to get my accounts straightened out, I will ask them.
The picture interests me...I may have to ask the banker about that as well.

Wow. My husband's wallet was stolen from our car about six weeks ago. He forgot to lock the car and so the thieves had easy access to it. Always lock your car, even if you think you live in a "safe" neighborhood. Thieves, it seems, like to prey on those types of places. We immediately contacted the credit card company and fortunately the thieves had not bought anything with it. I am sorry about your loss. I have never used a debit card, only a credit card, and I am afraid of debit cards since they are like carrying cash around. Credit cards can be cancelled, but debit cards come right out of your banking account, which is scary to me.

In answer to your question: I have only rarely had my ID checked when using a credit card. At gas stations, I have noticed that they ask for my zip code, which I feel is probably a theft deterrent. It is an inconvenience to have to pull out an ID, but perhaps there would be less theft with cards if that happened.

At my job we are not even allowed to touch customer's debit or credit cards. We show them where to slide their card. If they ask us to look at their ID we don't have to. Its company policy. I believe its meant to shift liability about possibly running stolen cards to the customer.

The only time I touch a card is when it won't run through the card reader, then I type the number in. It rarely happens.

I'm almost never asked for ID. I think RadSub's theory is probably exactly right.

As with others, I am very rarely asked to see my ID. They rarely even see my credit card as most places have you swipe it yourself.

I am rarely asked to show ID when using a credit/debit card. I think with all the advances in technology, everyone has become so lax with the security aspect. Most stores have those electronic pin pads set up for your privacy. Not only am I not asked for ID, I am never asked to give my card to verify signature.

when I pay debit I am never asked for ID.
When I pay credit I am asked about 50% of the time. I do have SEE ID on the signature line instead of signing it.
I do always thank the sales person for asking when they do.

I am asked about 50% of the time, however I don't know what they are looking at because they only glance for maybe a second and some don't even look they just ask for it.

Depends where I'm shopping, but they don't ask very often.

I have a friend that doesn't sign the the back of her credit card and writes "please ask to see ID" A few years ago she was always carded now she hardly gets asked at all. I htink with all the machines were you slide you card yourself people stopped caring.

Not very often. Around here places either have the pin pads or the cashier checks the back of the card for a signature. If the card is signed, they do not ask for id. If it is not signed they will ask for it.

I wrote "see id" on mine, and I'm rarely asked to show my id. Disapointing. When I used to work retail, we had to ask for id and compare the signatures.

I am hardly ever asked other than at Walmart. That is only if the amount us over $50 dollars. I have check ID on the back of the card. At other places we shop at, the cashier looks on the back for a signature then hands it back without asking for ID.
