Working full time now

I know no one wants to hear from me, and I won’t ever post again if that is the case, but I wanted to let everyone know that after two months and 56 interviews, I now have a full time job as a teaching assistant at an area public school, and a small, part time tutoring position two afternoons a week. Plus I am teaching English online two very early mornings a week.

When we could not sell our home. We knew that we were going to need to bring in some more money so we would be able to save what we have and not have to liquidate any funds. We also planned to use the money to invest and save for when we are truly too old to work anymore.

I was originally scared to get back in the world of being an employee after being self employed for 13 years, and being older, but decided to dive in and see what would happen.

Some here thought I had not been working, but don’t realize that I have 25 solid years of work experience, 20 in teaching. When I was self employed, I was teaching in private schools every day. I just got my money from parent clients and not from the schools I was teaching at and therefore did not have to get observed or be under the rules employees were. I simply arrived, taught, and left.

The job search experience has helped me gain confidence that my 20 years of teaching experience and previous experience as a journalist before that does have value. I have even been interviewed for much higher paying positions, some in the area of copywriting and marketing, and a few private school music positions that did not necessarily require certification. I also am a finalist for a writer/researcher position at a company that helps mortgage companies communicate with their clients. That would pay a lot more than the school position so I will see what happens.

In only one instance did I come across someone who said I was too old to work for them. Most found a lot of value in all the experience I could offer and I actually got two teaching assistant offers. I took the one closer to home.

Also, my husband is proud of me and the effort I put in and realizes that he was wrong about me being too old. He subbed for 11 years before he retired and thought about getting back into that, but, wanted to see what I would come up with first. He has been driving for Uber more.

My first day of school is today. I have never worked in a public school and have never been an assistant so I hope I am not too clueless going in. Today, I have to teach English online until 7am, go work at the school from 9-3:30, then go to the tutoring center from 4:30-7:30. I won’t be working all three jobs every day. The two smaller schools jobs are two days a week.

We are staying in our home for now and may consider moving in the future after working a little more and saving. In a couple of years, I might be able to get a business going again and have considered finishing my certification since I was only short a few classes.

Congratulations on the new job. I'm working as a para this year after not getting a teaching position. It feels good just to have a job that has benefits, and I do enjoy my job. I was tired the first several weeks as this job requires a little more of me physically than my last job, but I adjusted and feel pretty good most of the time. I wish you well with your new position and all that you have going on.

Congratulations on your job! I hope you have a great first day. I'm sure you will be worn out, and I'm sure it will take some time to get used to your new position. But I'm sure your school will be so glad to have you there.

You should be commended for working so hard with all these hours!

I'm sure he's proud for your all efforts and the money you will earn.

Sorry, but I find it less than desirable and a lack of effort on his part to add support for your family by waiting to see what you would come up with before taking action himself to contribute additional earnings. (Just my opinion/thoughts on that)

Thatís a very ambitious schedule for your first day! Good luck and be ready to just put your feet up when you get home

I am not sure what you mean by being older, but (being older, myself ) I think we have a lot to offer in terms of life experiences, and a sense of perseverance. I wish you the best in your job(s) and please keep us posted!

Hooray! Congratulations! Iím happy to hear from youóand you sound happier yourself.

Taking on 3 jobs is hard, but I believe youíre going to manage it just fine. Iím glad you decided to show your DH who you are, and maybe even have some influence on him.

I completely understand this part. I taught for 9 years then was a SAHM for 11 years. I was terrified when it was time to go back. I was convinced Iíd forgotten everything I knew, that I was a fraud and a failure. Surprisingly, my life experience made me a stronger and more capable worker and I know thatís exactly whatís going to happen to you.

Show the world who you really are, jazzer, a strong and capable woman. Please report in oftenówe want to hear about your highs and lows. We care. Good luck!

This bothers me. I know he's older than you, but it sounds like he's expecting you to carry the ball for finances.

My DH retired in May. I could quit any day I want, but I like what I'm doing and want to work. I call it my travel fund!

I understand someone's opinion/right to use the label "post police", but also respect other posters rights to offer their own opinions, also.

Following the history of her previous threads, many of us have previously praised, encouraged and at the same time, offered our opinions on her husband's previous behavior.

You will notice all kinds of opinions on this board. Some you will agree with, some you will not.

It sounds like you've found a good solution to your employment concerns. Things should slow down after the first few weeks and you'll do just fine. Remember that the first few weeks/months of any new job are challenging but you have years of experience to draw upon. Best of luck.

So nice to hear your update. Hope things go well! I know you have a lot to offer to your students with all of your teaching background and experience.

It also kind of sounded like you weren't really ready to make that big move geographically, as well as retirement wise, so hopefully that means you are not too stressed out about not selling your house just yet.

Keep us posted!
