I am seriously considering the idea of applying for a job at one of big retail stores. That way, I would at least have one source of income during summer. During the school year, I would have a second source of income. I will probably get paid minimum wage for such a retail job.

Has anyone tried this? It is possible that a store may not want to hire me because they figure that I would quit when the schools start again.

If I do get hired, then I have to think about when the schools start again. It would be nice to work just Sat and Sun at the big retail store.
However, I read comments of people who used to work in those stores. Many of them complained about crazy schedules. Many former workers also said that schedule was different from week to week...

In previous years, I had enough money for summer. This summer is different. Past school year was not too good. My sub pay was cut and I worked fewer days. It would be nice to get some job now for summer.

and I sub during the school year. As a business owner in the service industry I can tell you this ... GOOD people who WANT to work just evenings and weekends are hard to come by. I wouldn't think you would have a problem if you state you are only available evenings and weekends!

PSub is right. That way neither job conflicts and still allows you to offer to work the occasional retail day shift during school holidays to fill in.

It makes for a long work day during the school year but it's doable.

I kept my night and weekend job even after graduation to make extra money when sub jobs were few and far between. My manager is nice enough to understand my restricted schedule and is happy to have the extra help during the summer when there are more hours available.
I also work for a tutoring company that lets me decide how many students I want and lets me set up my own hours with the students every week.

For the past three years I've worked at Barnes & Noble while subbing. My schedule varies a bit, but I usually work two or three days each week - combo of nights and weekends. The store is VERY good about working around my teaching schedule and kids' sports & school activities. There have been quite a few days where I had to be at school at 7:30 worked til 3 then had to be at the store from 4 or 5 til 10 at night, but overall I've been happy about keeping both jobs.

I work graveyard at a casino and sub during the day. Its very hard on my body and mind but I do it because one, I need the money and two, I love to teach. The bad thing is I miss my wife and daughter.

Right now it sounds like this will be my 3rd year doing this routine. Last year I was lucky and had my own classroom.
