Moving to MS! Resources? Advice?

Well, after some deliberation and twists of fate, I'm moving into middle school! I've been teaching elementary (3rd, 4th and 5th), but I actually subbed at this MS years ago, and my kids went there, so it's not entirely new territory. So now, instead of spending my summer prepping for another year in elementary, I'll be prepping for middle school ELA. Do you have favorite resources? Blogs? Books? Activities? Recommendations? I'd be grateful for any and all tips you wish to share...

I love middle school (I teach 7). The kids range from still being elementary schoolers to growing up and having their own voice. Its amazing to watch them become their own individual. Be prepared though for the different maturity levels.

As for resources, I teach SS but many teachers use Newsela and scholastic news. I also rave about Socratic smackdown (google it and add pdf), the site comes with resources and everything. I modified it to meet the needs of my classroom and use talking chips with it.

Good luck, and welcome to MS! Where its it own planet

Achieve the Core, Membean, and Ready Florida in my new school this upcoming year. I have used Newsela and Readworks in the past. I have also found Teachers Pay Teachers a valuable resource for material.

Our 7th graders will read The Outsiders and The Giver. I would talk to teachers who are currently at the school and ask what programs they use so you can familiarize yourself with the programs and also ask what novels you will be expected to cover so you can read (or reread) them and do some planning.

Good luck!

We use Beestar for all the different ages. If you have students who are struggling its a great site for them.

I'm also moving to middle school after 4 years of 1st grade! I taught 5th grade for 3 years prior to that. So ready to move up to the older kids. I will be checking this sight a lot!
