Hi
Just wanted to say Prodigy Math is a great site...you can pick skills for the kids to work on and they get to play a game.
It's a win win

I tried it the last few years after hearing such great things about it. I set up my student accounts and assigned things for the kids to do.

Then, I listened to and watched the kids. They admitted that they do the gaming stuff and avoid the math part at all costs! They spent all their time trying to find each other and visiting.

I didn't feel it was worth the time.

I just gave the kids the pre-test yesterday. I think their usernames are unnecessarily difficult, but I really like the data I get from the pre-test. We'll see how it goes.

I had students use Prodigy and they would make their own account and do kindergarten level work. They would run around playing tag or hide and seek with their little Avatars. Basically they'd do whatever they could to avoid any actual math. For the students who actually wanted to do the math it wasn't helpful either. The load times are horrendous. Many things are blocked without paid accounts. I just never felt it was worth the time. I prefer Splash Math, Khan Academy or IXL. All of them are free except IXL.

They just guess at it or do only what they know. I've found that with just about any online program. When the going gets tough, the kids who are motivated will work while the kids who struggle do what they do a lot -- give up.

I used it last year and there were definitely some kids who just played around. This year Iím going to use the assignment feature a lot more and see how it goes.
