I am a long time member but signed out because I am not supposed to tell anyone this but ...
My DH just sat me down and showed me a letter from his boss. He gifted him a very substantial amount of money. Six zeros, substantial. My DH has been a very loyal employee and has gone above and beyond many times. We are going to invest the money and not go crazy with new cars etc. We have paid off our mortgage 18 years early so that isn't a factor. I have been worried a little about our retirement and this will ease any worries we may have. We will be taken care of when the time comes. I'm just numb and a little queasy.

How do you even thank someone for such a gift?

So happy that your husband's hard work is being rewarded this way! I'm sure his continued work contributions are the thanks the boss wants.

Tell me DH isn’t in the education field without telling me DH isn’t in the education field!!

In all seriousness that is amazing. What a nice gift and a nice weight off your shoulders. I hope you can do something fun with a small piece of it!

Wow, what wonderful luck and such a blessed gift! (I say luck because I know it's a reward for his hard work, but not everyone is blessed to be rewarded for hard work and I'm so glad he has been!)

I agree with this. I would write a nice thank you card and just keep up the good work. I'm glad it offers you some relief. Were all bosses so generous and thoughtful!

Wow! That's a life-changing gift. Take your time deciding about investment strategies and purchases. It might be wise to get some tax advice also.

That is amazing! Your hubby must be an excellent employee! I'm not sure how else to say thank you besides a heartfelt thank you note. Or maybe a donation to the boss's favorite charity in his name. I agree with the poster that I'd be tempted to make one splurge, then invest the rest.

I think a thank you letter, mentioning how you now feel secure for retirement, would be a wonderful response.
And, after graciously accepting the gift go on to live well. Seeing that happen is the best thank you I can imagine for the giver.
