How do you approach spelling? Do you teach it in a center or whole group? What activities do you do?

I teach spelling through shared reading. I use poems that have spelling patterns, or we pick words out of books and I also do work wall spelling games and activities. Sometimes spelling activities will be in a workstation - but I don't teach from a spelling book.

I do my spelling by using a "Poem of the Week." All spelling words for the week are taken from the poem. You can see examples on my website (both on the student and teacher sides.)

Word sorts

I use word sorts to have the students sort words into the various rimes I'm covering for the week. I usually "pretest" the students by giving the words and seeing if they can sort them into the correct column with the rimes as headings. During the week, I practice spelling words in sentence dictation (sm. or lg. group), along with grammar rules we're studying.

I do spelling investigations the book is by Diane Snowball. It emphasizes patterns, and students have their own words based on their ability.

tbsrwilson, where do you get your poems from? Do you make them up on your own? Do you do your spelling from a book? Thanks
