Literacy Resource Room

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Just wondering if anyone has set up a literacy resource room or book room at their school for levelled books? We have one, but need to move it to another room. Our sign out process doesn't really exist and our teacher resources are hiding around the school in a variety of locations. Since I need to start fresh, I am wondering if anyone has an great ideas of how to organize/keep track of resources going in and out and how to make it an inviting place for teachers to discuss literacy!

Thanks!

We have a large closet that is our Book Room. We have the books organized by level (of course)

The books are in cardboard magazine holders. About 3-4 sets per holder.

For check out we use clothes Pins with our names on them. We just put our pins on the bins that we have taken sets from. When we return them, we take our clips back. It works pretty well. Not saying that no books go missing, but they are usually all returned. If any are missing, our Reading Specialists do inventory at the end of the year and list books that are missing. We usually find them in someones classroom.

All the books are leveled by letter in Ziploc Baggies in an open cardboard boxes in a room.
Each box has the titles of all the book sets in the box (makes it easy to find books).
Each Ziploc baggies has one library (cardstock) card in it stating the title of the book and how many copies are in the baggie.
We sign our name to the library card and put it in a basket under our last name.
Easy, low cost, and effective.

We also have a book room which I LOVE!! Our book sets are in a bag with about 6 books each. On each bag is a small envelope with a library card labeled with the title, how many copies, and level. Then the bags are placed in large white baskets with DRA Levels listed on the basket. We have fiction and nonfiction baskets at all levels. On a bulletin board in the room there is an envelope with each teacher's name. When we take a bag of books we take the library card off the bag and put it in our envelope on the board. We return the books to a box in the room where our reading specialist counts the books and then finds the card and returns it to the shelf.

Our book room is part of our library. The leveled readers are placed in baggies and then placed in magazine type cardboard file bins. Each baggie & reader are marked with it's level. Then the baggies are placed in the cardboard file box and it too it labeled with the reading level and the titles. Each bin has a number and the baggie is labeled with it's bin number. We have to check the bags of books out just like we do the regular library books. It works very well at our school.

Thanks for all of those great ideas - I know our school has a long road ahead in organization! We currently operate book check out the same way that most of you do, but are having trouble keeping track of the books out. Thanks again for the great ideas - I love the clothes pin idea!
