We use Wonders first grade and give a selection test each week over the story we read in class. Second grade uses the weekly (cold read) test. Second graders are having a difficult time with it. Just wondering what assessments other first grades use. Do you read the questions to them? Thanks for your thoughts .

We use running records to determine each child's independent and guided reading levels. We read the questions to them.

Otherwise, they should be able to retell the stories they are reading, giving the important details, telling character feelings, if they changed and why.

I'm not sure if this is helpful, or not!

I dislike selection tests. Since the selection usually gets beaten to death throughout the week, what exactly are you assessing? How well they memorized the story? How well they listened? I want to know how well a child can apply the skill to unseen text.
