Hi Everyone,

I finally figured out how to use ZOOM...used it with my kids....and now my district says we can't use ZOOM. Ugh.

Do you have any suggestions/links I can use to learn how to use Google Chat? I've been googling it for videos, but haven't found any helpful ones.

Thank you! Hang in there!

Do you mean google hangouts? Super easy. We started having IEP meetings on there, but the district has switched to zoom for other things because you can have more people on at once. I like the layout of google hangouts better than zoom.

Go to your google calendar, create an event. Double click so that you are on the event page that gives you more options (i.e. where you would normally invite people). You will see a button that says "add conferencing." Click on it and "hangouts meet" will come up. Click on that, it will show a link you can give to people to join the meeting as well as a phone number they can call in to join as an alternative to using internet. Maybe play around with it with teammates before adding kids.

My team had never used it before and we were instructed to start doing IEP meetings with it. It only took a couple of minutes for us to get the hang of it, and so far parents haven't had any issues joining the meetings.

I'm super curious about why you can't use zoom, too.
We're hearing that our district will be requiring teachers to use it - but everything changes hourly so maybe this too will change.

Thank you, Haley23, for your help! I'm not the most tech-savvy person, and boy am I learning a lot and learning it a warp speed!

I used Zoom and things went pretty well. Then, I got an email last night saying our district has concerns about the security. I don't know enough about it, but it I don't know how Google Chat/Meet can be more secure.

We'll see. Like a PP said, things are changing all the time. Hang in there!

Apparently someone hacked into a Chipotle business meeting over zoom and started broadcasting porn...just saw a New York Times article about it. Perhaps that's why the sudden distaste for Zoom? Although I assume any of the platforms could be hacked, I could easily see my district making a rash decision over something like that.

Hi,

I think zoom is not considered secure because they have to log in to the platform using their own email and password.

Maybe google classroom is more secure? I tried to add people to my classroom to help me but they can't be added unless they have an address from our district. So the general public can not log into my google classroom even if I give them the code. Not sure if it is like this in all schools....

I'm wondering if you have to schedule a google hangout on the calendar first? Can you just send a message to meet at 10 am? Also, how do you end the hangout? If the teacher leaves does it end or can the students keep interacting?

Thanks! The more i learn the more I realize how little I know!

If the teacher leaves, kids can still interact.

Not sure what grade level you are. I have my kids each wave goodbye to me and then hang up so I am the last one. A few minutes later, I go and join again and make sure I am the last one in.

To make it consistent, I tell the kids it is their “Ticket Out.”

Good luck...I get it.

I read on Thursday or Friday that Google had responded and changed Meets so that students could not come into a session early or late and hang out, but I haven't tried it.

can't video chat, either

My district said that I can't use Zoom, either. They cited student privacy concerns.

We also cannot use Meet, formerly Google Hangouts, because our G Suite for Ed administrator has blocked it.

I'm using a Google spreadsheet linked to classroom, but it's really clunky, and the kids are having trouble using it.

Our LMS doesn't have a threaded discussion option anymore, either. I'm thinking of going for old-fashioned phone calls. I have an assigned list from church, too, so what's a bunch more???
