Huh, I guess I didn't realize Hugh Hefner was still around! Well, he's not anymore, I suppose.

I just saw that. I thought for a while that he was dead and they weren't releasing it. Obviously not true.

Sad.

I just learned this and it definitely changed my opinion of him somewhat:

Quote:
He funded the legal team for Roe, and helped overturn sodomy laws in most states, paving the way for gay rights. He funded the lower court challenges to laws restricting abortion and birth control, and filed amicus curiae in the Supreme Court case for Roe, as well as provided financial assistance to the legal team. He fought the postal service to the SCOTUS when they refused to deliver Playboy, and won, which is a significant 1A ruling.

The magazine was an adolescent male fantasy full of cars the reader would never drive, clothes he'd never wear, watches he couldn't afford, people he'd never meet, and naked women he'd never sleep with. And by presenting women as another consumable, another product, that is what was gross. But that wasn't the whole story.

I knew he was still alive and was wondering what age he'd live till.

The only times I've seen a glimpse of his character is in a couple of reality shows about his girlfriends. I admit that in THOSE shows, he seems like a very down to earth, nice man, despite what he stands for (nude women/risque element). But, of course that's only one aspect. Who really knows.

I must disagree with dear Zia on this one. I think Hefner's acts being touted in the obits as civic service were mostly self-serving. I don't believe Hefner cared a whit about the common man and I guarantee he cared even less about women. I think he was an intelligent man who parlayed his narcissism and conceit into a successful business, but to imply he intentionally tried to make the world a better place is a stretch.

I might risk being flamed by saying this, but unless any of us knew him personally, we cannot come to the conclusion that he was purely self serving. All we have to go by are articles and rumors.

However, quotes from people who did know him were very positive. These are the people telling the masses who get their information second hand that they knew him personally and saw a good person.

That like any human being, he had his good and bad points. That being said he always gave me the creeps.

I think the use of the word stiff is very appropriate in his case.

Oh we don't really disagree. I stated facts of his actions; I never implied intent. And I am grateful Roe v Wade was passed and that ridiculous sodomy laws removed from law. I have no idea why he did it. I also don't really care.

I have always considered him a legal pimp and all around skeevy guy.

I posted what I did because I was previously unaware he was ever involved in any of that.
