to nap, or not to nap?

Kids always ask "should I just take a nap if I get tired during the test?" I never know what to tell them. What do you advise your kids to do?

FWIW, I teach 8th graders in ELAR. Would love y'alls' take on this.

Response: “only if you plan to take this class again next year.”

“Sleep at home. We work at school.”

I also have 8th graders, and they are some notoriously bad sleepers . They don’t get any sympathy from me because I’m also a bad sleeper who has to suck it up and deal when I’m tired.

I thought this post was about Kinders. But 8th graders needing a nap at school? I think not!

I would have copies of a letter to parents ready to go. Include... "Your child seems to be very tired in class and is asking to take a nap. Please adjust his/her bedtime and remove access to all cell phones/tablets/TVs, so your child will be ready to learn each day." They probably won't give the note to their parents, but at least they won't ask to take a nap again!

I thought you were talking about K-1 kids at first too!

I'm so confused about why 8th graders are 'always' asking you this. Neither as a student or a teacher have I come across a teenager napping during a test

Come to think of it, I've not had one of my k's fall asleep during an assessment either. Though I'll never say never

Does your school have an early or late start bell? Research seems to favor a later start time for middle and high schoolers. Naturally our district does just the opposite. The great majority of our students are bus riders. The bus drivers are required to drive 2 to 3 routes twice a day. Most elementary schools have a later start time than the upper grades.

I've never heard of this. Why would they think they could take a nap at school or that even asking would be appropriate?

I, too, thought this was going to be about kindergartners. 8th grade? Ummmm....No. Sleep on your own time!
