Zoom Meeting

Clip to ScrapBook #1

So I had my first Zoom meeting today with my second graders. I thought it went well due to the fact that we have never done this before. I had emailed prior notifications of some proper etiquette but somehow there is always one student whom got out of hand. As we played a scavenger hunt game, and I asked them to choose an object of medium size in their household, one of them shouts out that they were drinking beer from this can. I tried to mute him, but he continued to be silly. One of my coworkers whom her daughter is in my class texted me...and I told her I would contact the parents immediately.

Then another parent emailed me that her son was very offended that I didn't really acknowledge him and that no none spoke to him. REALLY? These are little kids whom are excited and only kept looking at themselves as they tried to run around the house getting things I told them to search for. I called on everyone's name and said hello, but I gather it wasn't enough for this mom and her kid. AT one point in my meeting the screen froze everyone and then it came back.

Parents!!!!!!!!! I don't think I want to Zoom with my class anymore or how can I even put out there certain rules and expectations of these parents in a professional matter that this is not all about your kid. Good Lord!

We were told not to use zoom because in some school system it was hacked and started showing pornography. It is appalling that can happen but I guess not surprising. I teach high school so I could definitely see a high schooler doing something stupid like that.

Everything you describe is exactly why Iím resisting video conferencing for primary students.

Iím also a big believer that we should be trying to reduce screen time for littles - not increase it!

You'll never please everyone! We've done two class zoom meetings and I learn a bit every time.

I give them a few minutes with the sound on, and then I tell them I'm going to mute them all. If they have something to say they raise their hand and I unmute. I try to get to everyone at some point so they all have a chance to be heard.

Don't let a few parents ruin it for you. I'm sure most are appreciative of your effort and the kids are happy to see each other.
