"That salad you make."

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I just finished making "that salad you make" to take to a picnic tomorrow.

I asked what I needed to take to the picnic. Nobody could give me any specifics. I want something that won't give everyone food poisoning since it's HOT here. Someone finally suggested "that salad you make". Ummm . . . that's a pretty wide range. There's regular garden salad, fruit salad, baby greens salad, pea salad, egg salad, and pasta salad that I've made to take various places. Nobody could put a name to the requested salad.

Turns out it's something I consider a dessert, not a salad. I don't even know what it's called, and I don't use a recipe. It's cool whip, condensed milk, cherry pie filling, crushed pineapple, and mini marshmallows. To me, that's dessert stuff, not salad stuff. I think I'll make my own recipe for it and write it on a card and call it "That Salad I Make".

What is that stuff anyway?

It sounds like Ambrosia, although I believe it usually has coconut in it. Sounds yummy anyway!

My mom makes one like this----it's frozen. For years, my kids asked for "Nana's salad" whenever we visited!

Have fun tomorrow! I'm sure your your salad with its special name will be a smash hit!

It's a very "toss it together" kind of recipe.
  • small container of cool whip
  • can of sweetened condensed milk
  • can of cherry pie filling
  • can of crushed pineapple
  • half a bag of mini marshmallows

Stir it all up, and you're done. You can add more of less of things if you want. I don't think it matters a whole lot. I put more marshamallows in the one I made tonight because I hate them and didn't want leftovers. I put less pineapple because I ate some of it.

I agree, it's a version of ambrosia, and my relatives in Iowa call it a "salad" too

I must admit, I like the taste of it. I've had it at a lot of Iowan luncheons and funerals. (Not saying it's an Iowa thing necessarily, but that's been my only real exposure to it)

I worked with a woman that would make it for potlucks. She called it Cherry Fluff.

Here, we make "The Green Stuff". It's similar to Ima's in that it has
Cool Whip, mini marshmallows, and crushed pineapple, but we add a box of pistachio pudding, dry mix only, (That's what makes it green.), and sometimes finely chopped walnuts.

We've done various versions of "Pink Stuff" and "Green Stuff" at Thanksgiving since I was a kid.

It's called Watergate Salad because the bits of pistachio resemble "bugs" as in the "bugs" used to listen to Democratic headquarters during the Watergate scandal.
