PT Docs: UTI

I went to urgent care Saturday because I felt like I was getting a UTI. Doctor agreed that my symptoms pointed to one even though my urine test was inconclusive. I was prescribed 5 days of Macrobid. She said to come back if I wasnít better after the meds and sheís send off a culture to get a more definitive answer. (Iíve often had negative quick urine tests and positive cultures.)

Monday afternoon I started feeling worse, and slept about 5 hours. Woke up with a fever of 100.3.

Do I finish the last two days of meds, then call or call now?

Call in the morning

I think I'd continue taking the meds--and call in the morning if you aren't starting to improve. No reason to wait the full 5 days before giving the doctor a progress report.

When Iíve had these, which is about once a year, I start feeling better within a day of taking the antibiotics. Now, your system might be different, but you should have already started to feel better by now. Maybe itís the wrong antibiotic or maybe there is something else going on. Iíd call you doctor first thing in the morning.

Hope you feel better!

Call now. My mom had one last year that took several different antibiotics to kick - they're becoming increasingly drug-resistant and what's worked in the past for you might not anymore.

Sending you all know my thoughts for quick recovery, I know how awful they are.

I would definitely call now so you can do the culture. I have had recurrent UTIs in the past and sometimes Macrobid doesn't work for me.

also ask her/him if there was something else you could take to eliminate the symptoms of the UTI. I have taken an over the counter med. that helped a lot. Also, people will tell you to drink cranberry juice, but that has the juice and sugar which kind of cancel each other out, so I do take cranberry pills. Drink LOTS of water.

Hope you feel better soon.

Talked to the doctorís office. Iím supposed to finish the antibiotic, today & tomorrow, then call back Wednesday and talk to the doctor. Said theyíll probably want me to come in and give a sample for culture and change antibiotics.

UTIís are a complex issue. So many variations in symptoms and bacteria.

So glad you talked to the dr. I've had so many UTI's through the years and I always get major relief within a day of starting the antibiotics.

Hopefully they find something that works for you quickly. They're no fun for sure.
