DS(13) MH Update: School was tough but life is better

Sorry that it’s been soooo long since I’ve updated!

So DS went back to school after Easter Break. The district put him in a 12/1/1 program. It started well and DS really tried. He got frustrated easily, and started to self harm out of frustration to the point that he had to be TCI standing prone held (“It felt like a hug” DS said) and given his breakthrough anxiety meds. We tried a shorten day schedule but it was still hard. So he finished off the year on home instruction. I took FMLA though most of May and June.

The good news is that he has started EMDR therapy and likes his therapist a lot. DH and I have regular appointments with the therapist’s supervisor, who is top expert in our area. We have already seen progress there.

Also, we have had his antipsychotic meds change from Zyprexa (which made him a zombie) to Latuda, which has made DS his “normal” self again. Insomnia is a problem but we are putting any med changes for awhile to have the therapy start working.

If you are a praying person, please pray for us to find the right high school placement for DS. He wants to attend our local high school in their 12/1/1 program and we are hoping that he can.

Thanks for reading this so far and that you all for your support! Your support and advice mean so much!

Sounds like you are doing everything you can for your son. I am glad there has been good progress and you have a plan going forward. It sounds like your son is working to get through this, too, and that is awesome. Best of luck and wisdom as you have to make choices and decisions going forward. I know this is a rough time on your family, but you are doing it!

So happy to hear from you. I'm glad things are going better and I hope and pray that your DS keeps making progress and that you have many more good days than bad. It can be hard some days, but know we are thinking of you and of course, continuing to pray for you and all parents facing such hard challenges. Stay strong and positive and keep us posted.

Thanks for updating us! I always look forward to hearing from you.

Latuda is a great med! DD gained weight on it so refused to take it anymore, but it did work very well! I am glad he likes his therapist!!! That is major!

Just letting you know so you don't feel alone, that DD also struggled a lot with school because of her anxiety and paranoia.

I am praying for you all daily!

Nancy

I'm really glad to get your update. It sounds like he remains motivated, which is a HUGE part of the battle. It sounds like you are starting to get some meds down. It's always so weird to me that we can't know right away what meds will help.

What is a 12/1/1 program?

Glad to hear from you. Also happy to see things are a bit better. So sad that there is no magic pill to instantly fix things.

I hope your DS continues to be motivated. That will definitely make progress easier!

I hope he gets into the school/program that meets his needs. I have never heard of 12/1/1 programs.
