Children scared

Clip to ScrapBook #1

One of our second graders told me she is afraid of this Corona virus, that she hopes she doesn't get it. I told her she shouldn't be scared, that kids are doing well with this virus. It really is a shame kids are feeling the panic that is around them. We've got to do better as a society to help our children know the basics so they can sort through the hype.

Free on Brainpop - might be useful for the younger kids. I haven't had a chance to use it with my students, so I can't tell you if it has the desired affect.

Brain pop had a great video about it. We just talked about hygiene and hand washing for all germs. They seem fine except one boy went to the office that day for his inhaler and told them he has the virus!!

We had to have an assembly for our 5th grade because you can imagine what they were saying to each other about who has it and where it came from.

Prudent and prepared...

"I will be neither paranoid nor placid. I will be prudent and prepared."

We have an abundance of opinions compared to facts. Stir in a little mass hysteria and... well, the stores run out of toilet paper.

We do need to address this with children in an intelligent manner, not based on opinions and social media.

One of the best resources I've found:

https://childmind.org/article/talkin...e-coronavirus/

The video is less than four minutes long and the accompanying article doesn't take long to read. It's a good investment of time. We don't need to have all the answers but we do need to know how to talk about it and be comfortable doing so.
