The sad realization every year in July

I live in an area that is growing rapidly, and I would wager half of the population didn't live here 20 years ago. There are constantly people moving in. A big part of that is that we are near a military base, but we're also a cheaper city near a major US city.

As is expected, someone was crushed on our community Facebook page on Saturday (July 11).

"Hey! It's July 11th, so it's free slurpee day at 7/11! I haven't paid attention, where are they?"

For some reason we don't have 7/11s, and there isn't a single one within hundreds of miles (including the major US city 30 minutes away). In fact, I didn't realize 7/11s were real growing up. I thought they were a commonly used fake name in TV shows and movies.

When I moved south one company I missed was Entenmann's bakery products. They followed me south two years later the exact same month I started a very restrictive diet. I had more will power than I ever thought I could have. If you've never had their coffee cake, your life is not complete!

We don't have 7-Elevens in my neck of the woods, either. The first time I went to one was on my vacation to Thailand in 2013!

7-11 memory

We used to have a 7-11 across the street from my elementary school. My dad was the assistant principal there. Every day after school, I would go find him and say "Can I go to 7-11 for an Icee?" He would give me some change (they were $.25 back then!) and I would have the school crossing guard escort me over.
I would tell this story to my third graders every year. We always remembered the fact family (4, 7, 11. 4+7=11, 7+4=11, 11-7=4, 11-4=7)
The good old days

I have a 7-11 walking distance from me. I never really went though, but it's the most convenient place for me to get a money order.

We used to not have any, but 7-11 just bought a local chain of gas stations here and are building a couple more locations. So next year, we’ll be ready!
