2nd Grade Next Week (Possibly for 12 Weeks)

Some of you may remember my recent experience subbing in a 5th grade "silent" classroom in which the students were so extremely respectful (due to the teacher's heavily promoted Christian values) that it sparked a long thread/discussion on this board.

It turns out that the aide and the reading specialist were so impressed with me on that day that they recommended me to the principal. He called me directly this week, and asked me to sub for a 2nd grade classroom in which the teacher was out for surgery. (Actually, I would be their third teacher this school year.) I accepted.

He wants me in there next week to test the waters. If all is successful, then I would become their teacher for 12 weeks, and possibly even until the end of the school year.

I've never been in the classroom, and I've never met the students. In fact, I am new to the building. All I know is that:

-- Lesson plans will already be done for me.
-- There are 25 students (17 boys, 8 girls).
-- The principal described the class as "ornery." (Yikes!)

That's it. Wish me luck.

Yikes! I can see why it might be ornery with that boy to girl ratio. Good luck!

What a great chance to show this school what you've really got!! I have been told that long term sub positions will most likely lead to a permanent position! Just do your best and don't listen to the stereotypes that have already been put on the class. You are their teacher now and you can change the atmosphere of the room! I would go in there with high expectations and a positive attitude and I am sure it will be wonderful!! Good Luck and keep us posted!!

What are they going to pay you to do this for 12 weeks?

That's wonderful that other teachers noticed the great job you do and recommended you. I hope everything works out for you. That will be nice to be in a classroom for twelve weeks with the lesson plans done ahead of time. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you

With someone else writing you a 12 week plan as they go into surgery, I'd expect to do some rewriting/changing the plans.

You'll get a chance to add some of your own ideas/activities as time goes along. Besides, writing plans for that long I'd think someone just to go to the Teacher's Editions and say do these pages on these days and run off these worksheets; things get off schedule over that long a period.

You can and should (to impress properly) do better than that. Supplement, add exciting introductions, and variations for the students.
Adjust to their weaknesses and strengths.

I hope you enjoy working with these students. They deserve stability in their class.
