I really like to read a picture book on the first day of school. This is my first year teaching sixth grade and I am in need of suggestions. Does anyone have any titles of picture books that are appropriate for middle schoolers and could be read on the first day of school?

Are you departmentalized or self-contained? If departmentalized, what do you teach?

I am going to read "First Day Jitters" to my 5th graders this year. This is a BRAND new intermediate school (5th and 6th) with students coming from 3 different elem. schools. I think this will be an appropriate book due to the circumstances. I am departmentalized, but we won't switch on the first day. I teach math, so I also like to read "Math Curse" and discuss.

the Black Lagoon is a book I like to read to my middle schoolers on the first day of school. I also have read first day jitters before. I think this year I will read first day jitters because it is a whole new teaching assignment for me.

My favorite is Dr. Seuss's Oh, the Places You'll Go. The kids think it's a bit silly at first, but I always say I was first introduced to it through my high school AP English teacher (which is the truth!).

My Favorite is WESLANDIA by Paul Fleischman. A story about a boy who creates a civilization for his summer project. He isn't very popular, but by the end he is the most popular kid on the block.

I use it to also introduce the SCAMPER technique. I have attached the sheet that I use with it! It really gets the kids thinking immediately!

"Read All About It!" by Laura and Jenna Bush. I teach reading. My kids really enjoyed it and thought it was neat because they are the President's wife and daughter.

I read "First day jitters" last year, and the students had all had it read to them the year before, so the surprise at the end was not a surprise. I hope I asked and we discussed new things, but I will try to find a new book for this year.
Thanks for the other suggestions

I just bought the Read All About It book today. I was at Borders and was going to pick up Splat the Cat, which is such a cute book. I thought the Bush book would be better for older kids and I thought of a writing assignment to go along with it!

Write about the books you like to read or your favorite book.

My reading and writing assignment for the first day is done!
