During the independent reading time do you have your students do just private and partner reading or do you have them do station type activities?

Definitely independent and partner reading. Stations are not a part of the workshop model.

Just independent reading and partner share. I honestly believe they don't need centers. And who has the time? The more they read the better they get.

Odd one out again--independent reading time for me always meant reading by yourself. They had daily opportunities for partner reading, but that was separate from independent reading.

I guess my question is about whether stations can/should be a part of Readers Workshop.

Our reading workshop time is just minilesson, independent reading/conferences, then share.

We have a separate guided reading time that involves stations/centers (one of the centers is partner reading).

No stations. You don't need them.

I do independent and partner reading with small group and independent conferences while the children read. No stations.

Reading Workshop does not include stations or centers. Guided Reading (groups), usually but not always, does include stations or centers.

Traditionally, no, stations are not part of the workshop model. But with the way things evolve over time, maybe a new trend is to include them.

I don't do stations. My students just read independently and respond independently to their reading.

I have found that Although stations are not apart of the model they can act as a support in the learning of reading. I've seen classrooms use stations and I've seen classes just do partner and independent reading. Private and partner reading seem to produce the best results, but I do believe stations every now and then can help.

You could try the daily five model

where you do independent, partner reading then add writing (write the room, free write in a journal etc), word work, and listen to reading. Then you have it all going on. This is what I choose and it works extremely well as they have many choices. I have them start the morning with writing workshop, they must also choose reading but their last choice can be any of the other options.
