Give me your best advice for beginning RW in my second grade classroom. I will still have to use SF Reading St. basal reader.
I have Debbie Miller's book. Just need a push to get going!

I think as long as you carve out a time every day, if possible, to have a mini lesson (or focus lesson), independent reading time, partner time, and a group share, you should do it!!! Kids love it, their reading and their thinking grows by leaps and bounds, your knowledge of your students' reading will grow....it's all good! As Mem Fox would say, "It's real reading!"
I've been using it in Second for four or five years. I wouldn't do it any other way! So far, we have NO basal!
Happy Reading!

Reading Workshop really is just good teaching. Having time every day for a short, focused lesson and then lots of time for kids to practice it is so valuable. Just having lots of independent reading time to read books that are interesting to them has helped my students learn to love reading and has helped them grow so much in reading!

Whenever I start RW with a new class, I always spend a lot of time in the first few weeks practicing routines - how it should look/sound when we come to the carpet & return to our desks, student & teacher roles during workshop, noise level, when and how often kids can change out books, etc. We chart everything and review as needed.

Good luck!!

I use Debbie Miller's book as my teacher's guide and follow it straight through! It is great. When I had to use the basal I would use Mondays for that. Teach the skill during your minilesson and the kids read the story during reading time.

I just had my last class for 2 years, used only RW and they were ALL incredible readers by the end of 3rd grade.

Have fun - the kids will and they'll be reading!

Thanks! I know I'll love it and the kids will too.....it's just getting it started....the book boxes, organizing leveled books, thinking of mini lessons, etc.
It seems like an overwhelming task!

Have you read The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller? She is an INCREDIBLE reading teacher - 6th grade. Her book is a great read!!!

Thanks for the advice. DOes she include sample mini-lessons in the book?
