Clip to ScrapBook #1

I'm a first grade teacher looking into reading a Katie Wood Ray book for Writer's Workshop. I heard Wondrous Words is a great book but read that About the Authors is geared towards K-1. Which book would be better to invest in or are they both worth it? Thanks!

About the Authors first. It gives you a format for writing instruction. Wondrous Words is for how to use mentor texts to teach writing. Both are fabulous.

Wondrous Words is great. I teach 2n and love it because it gives you mentor texts for every text structure and craft technique you can think of. If you are getting tired of teaching the same old "small moments" unit, there are ideas about how to have kids mimic other great forms of narratives.

I've also heard that "In pictures and In Words" is great for k-2. It helps use illustrating as a powerful enhancement to writing. Might lean more K-1, but I also use aspects for 2.

I have Wondrous Words (I teach 6th grade) and love it.

All of Katie Wood Ray's books are extremely helpful, but I found About the Authors to be the most appropriate for first grade, especially at the beginning of the year.
