Not enough books

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Seasons Greetings to all,

I have not been on as often as I used to be. I come on occasionally to hear what's new. At the beginning of the school year, my supervisor gave us permission to have 2 hours of literacy each day. This was great news and I have been doing Daily 5 and Cafe with my Special Ed class of sixteen kids. I live in Jamaica and we are facing a huge literacy problem. The challenge I am having this year, is the availability of books. Unlike in the US, we don't have the luxury of doing the flea market finds and other novel ways of getting really cheap books. My kids will be coming back to school in January, with no good fit books to practice with. I need your help. Do you have any suggestions or know of any organization that would be willing to donate used books to our Special Ed department? Any help will be appreciated.

I would suggest you subscribe to readinga-z.com. You can print out leveled paper books. I know it's not as good as a "real" book, but it sounds like you really need "good fit books" fast. It costs about $80 for a one year subscription to the site and you can get a free trial. I use the site for my guided reading groups and really like it!

Thanks for that suggestion. I actually spent my own money to subscribe for the last four years. Printing the books is the problem this year though.

the Public Library? Can you check out books from there? Do you have other libraries nearby, as well?

I get a lot of my books from the used bookstore inside of my public library. Maybe you could check to see if there's one at your library. Most of the books I get are .25-.50. Good luck!

I really appreciate the feedback. Resources are pretty scarce here and the library does not offer those options. I will have to seek funding to try to renew my Readinga-z subscription. Hopefully, we'll be able to print books at least once for the week.
