YouTube has a 9:49 minutes video of an interview with Ruby Bridges that has a powerful message for us all. Thank you to Risa for leading me to it!

There are a number of other interviews on YouTube with her and with her first grade teacher and with the Federal Marshall who walked with her. Beautiful messages all.

I'm sorry that I can't post the direct link but thank you to anyone who can.

I have heard recently how powerful her message was on the video. I need to watch. I often wonder how at age 7 or so, she had the strength and courage to make the changes that would help the whole country. Thank you for the link.

Her mother Lucille died today. What a strong woman and great role model she must have been. I'm not sure if I could have sent my child into such a hostile environment. Risa, thanks for the link.

I am so sorry to hear that. Can you imagine the pride she must have felt to see her daughter in the White House just spending some time with President Obama discussing a Norman Rockwell portrait of her daughter. She must have been a very special lady too.

Risa,, thank you, your timing was impeccable!

I loved teaching about Ruby Bridges when I taught 5th grade. Her mother must have been ridiculously strong. Sad to hear she passed away.

This was always one of my favorite units when I taught third grade. But it really hit home when my son was in second grade and came home talking about it. I think that lesson stayed with him all his life. Thank you Ruby!

Since some of you shared that you taught about Ruby Bridges in your grades, I wanted to say that I did so as well when I taught first grade. Scholastics has a great book about her: The Story of Ruby Bridges, by Robert Cole. Because most students in my class were POC and also 6 years old like Ruby was when she entered school, they could relate to a certain extent. Year after year my students would ask very deep questions about her and about the people around her.
