I have decided that this is a good time to remind everyone that they need to be ready in case something happens to their spouse. I was lucky that my husband and I had prepared a notebook with all of the important information. We had also put together an envelope of all important paperwork so that I didn稚 have to search for anything. I was able to sit down with the notebook and just go down the list of people to call. All of the phone numbers and account numbers were already listed. Since I was not able to think clearly, having this list ready to go was a lifesaver. I have had a lot of conversations with fellow widows over the last two years. Here is a list of things that have been mentioned as necessary after your spouses death.

Wills
Insurance policies (Make sure the beneficiaries are correct.)
Bank accounts. Make sure both peoples names are on all accounts.
Safe deposit box. Where are the keys? Both names on the box.
Marriage and divorce papers
Social Security Cards (The number may not be enough. Have the card itself.)
Birth certificates
Adoption papers
Copies of Military records
Passwords to all accounts
Pension papers. Will you be getting money, or does it stop when your spouse dies?
Both spouses names on all titles. The titles need to say 登r not just 殿nd
Family information (Full names, birth and death dates, each other痴 parents, kids,)
Make sure you that you have an emergency fund. If your spouse is receiving Social Security or a Military pension, the last payment will be taken back and they will send a new check for the correct amount. This can take several months. Do you have enough money to live on until it gets straightened out?
A book containing the numbers of people you may need to call in an emergency. (Plumbers, roofers, etc.)

Thank you for the reminder. This is something we've talked about recently, but put on the back burner. Now my goal is to do it this next week!

May I add to DO IT NOW rather than later. You never know. My husband and I said we’d work on it in the fall/winter following my retirement. We got back from vacation and my husband collapsed that September night. Figuring it out is possible but time consuming, frustrating, and often confusing.

Great list Star-Gazer. I hope people listen to your advice.

ETA: My sons have seen what I have been/am trying to figure out and they are now taking care of this for their families. They are in their thirties, so tell your adult children, too!

I can稚 even imagine trying to get everything together at that time. I was in such a fog. I would sit down with the notebook every morning and make a few more calls on the list. I did have a VA rep that was a God send. I would walk into his office with a handful of military paperwork. He would take it from me and fill out the forms on his computer and send everything off.

This is an issue we don't like to think about but it is important. Do you know why titles should say or not and?

I think titles are like a bank check. If they say and, both parties have to sign it to transfer it. If they say or, you can do it on your own with one signature.

And means both parties have to sign. Or means either person can sign. It is easier to sell the car, property or house if the title says or.
