Ga. student suspended

Clip to ScrapBook #1

A high school in Georgia suspended a student who took this photo of a hallway, crowded with students. She had a brilliant response, she knew it was "good trouble." I hope the principal appreciates her attention to current events and willingness to take a stand and reverses his decision.

I saw this last night. I'm so angry at this district! Suspended her because THEY didn't have safety in place. I'm not a sue happy person, but I'd be on a warpath if they did that to my child!

I heard that they got her on the rule that students are not allowed to post on social media while on campus during the school day. A few lawyers in an article mentioned that she would have a greater leg to stand on if she had waited until the day was over and she was off campus to post the photo.

The district admin are sneaky you know whats here. They found a loophole to suspend her as a way to threaten other students to male sure they don’t get exposed again. This way they can hide the fact that they are taking no precautions at the school and can save their butts.

I read that she did wait to post it until after school. She said that students are allowed to have cell phones. The one charge she said is correct is that she posted students on social media. The girl said she does not regret doing that if it saves anyone from getting sick or dying.

Wow. Just wow. When I read the title of this thread, I thought it was going to be about a student being suspended for refusal to follow precautions, coughing on someone, something like that. This just reeks of inappropriateness on the district's level!

Why is "suspension" even the first go to?

What a great response! Personally, I'm glad she documented and shared what her school was like in their effort to keep students safe. I feel this photo will be replicated all over the country. It will be very difficult for students in schools to appropriately socially distance. I also understand that Georgia's governor has been reluctant to issue a statewide mask order.

I saw that last night too. Whatever happens, the district is going to come out of it looking like a$$holes. How many times have kids NOT been suspended for far greater infractions? Itís ridiculous. Good for her.

It’s North Paulding High School (about an hour outside Atlanta)

The picture of the school hallway is frightening.
The district decided masks are a personal choice.

But, no worries the school is fixing things.
Quote:
On Wednesday, the school addressed the controversy that had swirled around the viral photograph via an intercom announcement from North Paulding High School principal Gabe Carmona. In it, according to two people familiar with the situation, he stated that any student found criticizing the school on social media could face disciplinary consequences.

North Paulding high school has followed through with its announcement that any student who criticized the school on social media would face disciplinary consequences. The student, who took the picture and posted it, has been suspended.

The student has no regrets.
Quote:
"I'd like to say this is some good and necessary trouble," Watters said. "My biggest concern is not only about me being safe, it's about everyone being safe because behind every teacher, student and staff member there is a family, there are friends, and I would just want to keep everyone safe."

First, thank you for posting her exact quote. She seems to be the kind of student a school should be proud of.

Second, so glad to read that the suspension was lifted. Power of the press!!!

I saw her on CNN last night and found her intelligent and worried for the whole community. I'm glad she posted what she did, to let people know what was happening in the school. I did read today that her suspension was reversed and would not be on her school record.
