Clip to ScrapBook #1

I'm looking to start a community service club in my elementary school. Does anybody have any advice or resources that they have found that worked for them?

It sounds like a wonderful idea.

How many students will be in the club? You probably should limit the number unless you can get a cosponsor.

What ages? All grade levels? Or just the upper grades?

If you meet after school you will need to have snack time before you start the meeting as most kids are hungry at the end of the school day. How will you handle snack?

Where will you meet? Your classroom? The cafeteria? Gym? Library?

How many weeks will you meet? One grading period? One semester? All year?

Will you meet for an hour? More? Less?

I would do a project for your school to start.

Then I would look for nearby nursing or assisted living homes around you and do something for them.

Maybe you could do something for Thanksgiving holiday. Can drive or something.

Maybe collect coats for kids before winter holiday. Many kids can't afford a coat and get cold.

I would also do something nice for the firefighters at the nearest firehouse.
Maybe just have everyone prepare or buy some food to take to them.

Find an area that is littered and have a clean up session.

Make some bird feeders with seeds for the birds in the winter.

That is all i can think of. Good luck! You will learn as you go and make improvements. Nothing wrong with that.

I think 1956BD has some good suggestions. I found a website called Kid Activities (can't seem to get the link to load here) that had some community service ideas.
Some were
*planting produce and donating it
*planting seeds, growing plants, selling them and dconating the profits or donating the plants to nursing homes
*Picking up litter at a park
*Improving school grounds
*Make bookmarks for the school or local library
