I read this article about ways to build community. It made we wonder how do you build community? Please share your best one or two ways to build a sense of community in the classroom.

I have closing compliments at the end of the day, and at first I give many of them...nut soon kids are really great at giving specific compliments for their classmates.

In addition, we read picture books that apply and lots of talking about how we treat each other.

I teach special ed now but when I student taught in gen ed, we did "good deeds" at the end of the day for a couple minutes. Kids would say something kind that another particular person did for them (I.e. Bob helped pick up my pencils when I dropped them, sally invited me to play at recess etc) That person would then go add a star sticker to a table with about 100 spots. There was no reward- they just wanted to see how many sheets they could fill with good deeds.

The kids also made posters for the room with motivating quotes they picked out.

During morning meeting, the kids had a sharing time when about 3 Kids would share something. Every Monday, everyone said something super quick about their weekend.

Once a week during morning meeting, they would play a game or team building activity with challenges (the knot, bean bag toss with multiple bean bags in same/ different orders etc)

Even in 4th grade, we had student of the week on Fridays where the student and parent would come in with pictures, favorite items etc to share.

Trying to think of more but my cooperating teacher had an awesome community going
