Would you ride in a car with friends with your masks on? I was invited to go somewhere today, but my scary self declined.

I have not ridden with anyone except my parents who have not been going anywhere, and my husband who is in my bubble. I probably would have done the same thing.

My husband is an Uber driver and he did drive from early June until mid November almost every weekend. he did not drive at all from mid March when the lockdown began, until early June when restaurants opened for outdoor dining then later indoor dining. Things shut down again in mid November and my husband is collecting unemployment which may actually run until September. He won't be able to get the vaccine until June so this is a good thing.

Anyway, all of this to say that he drove people around but did not allow anyone in the front seat next to him or anyone not wearing a mask. He was safe enough because his back was to the people he was driving.

It might be safe if you sit in the back seat directly behind the driver, or you drive and a person sits directly behind you. However, I don't blame you for not doing it.

Open windows?

If it was a short ride, all wearing masks, and windows open at least partially, I probably would.

Yes, if we were in a convertible with the top down. Since the danger is viral loading the air, zooming through the air at 45-65 miles per hour seems even safer than standing outside in moderately still air, which I am willing to do.

I wouldn't do it in an enclosed car even with windows open.

Trip

There would have been 4 of us from different homes. I would've been in the front side. The trip would have been 45 minutes one way, a quick trip to a store, then back home. I was the only one to decline, but I'm glad that I did. Thanks for responding and for the article.

I did in the summer, when we could have our windows down, as well as wearing masks. No one got sick. But also, our numbers were a lot lower then. I definitely would not do it now.

I'm glad you declined! That was probably the smart decision.

Nope, I wouldn't. Good for you. It's hard to be the odd one out, but could "better safe than sorry" be any more applicable than it is now??

No. I wouldn't do it.

The theory that if your back is to another you are safer is not accurate. It is more about the airflow in the car. All windows down is the most safe, but even then the driver's risk is the highest. The safest for the driver is to open the passenger front window and the driver side back window. Air enters behind the driver and out the passenger window.

I have ridden in cars with others.

However, it has been with teachers in my work bubble (we are already sharing a phone, an office, equipment, work space....), and once with a good friend who lives alone and hasnít been seeing anyone, and I had just gotten out of a 14 day quarantine and she needed a ride to pick up her car. Plus, our numbers are really good right now.
