Story Retelling Rubric

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am having students retell stories we have read in class for their listening/speaking grades. My P wants a rubric for it, but I am lost right now! Anyone have a sample of one or have any ideas??

I have handouts with black and white pictures for each story, mostly from our reading series Open Court. The students have to cut out the pictures, sequence them, then retell the story using the pictures as a guide. Right now, we're working on the story, "Swimmy" by Leo Lionni. It's a lot of fun for me!! I love hearing the students speak to me. I get sick of hearing my own voice all the time

SueHue,
We use a checklist like the one I'm including below. It focuses more on identifying elements of a story and sequencing the events in a story and using "book language." We I'm only including the first page so you can get an idea, but there is a page 2 that has portions of the end of the story. Students need 15 checkmarks/points to pass. So glad you're having fun! I love using retelling in my room (And we love Swimmy!) and even have a retelling center which is my favorite literacy center to listen in on

as with many kinder assessments, it takes alot of time to do them 1:1. Our team chose a story that had clear story elements in it: "Armadillo's Orange" is a good one. There's a clear problem and resolution, etc.

What does your retelling center look like, Chewiefairy? Can you share?
Sounds like fun!

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for responding! It seems like you are answering a lot of my questions.

Chewfairy, I can't view your document for some reason. It comes across as a jpeg, and is itty-bitty, so I can't read the print. I don't know how to make it larger! Any advice???

I use a checklist too. I am attaching my rubric along with the checklist for revisions (on the second page). I use this for seventh grade, so you may need to edit it for your expectations.
