Team Teaching in K

Clip to ScrapBook #1

My neighbor teacher and I are considering team teaching next year. Our rooms are large and we share a removeable wall. There is another Kindergarten team that are currently doing this in our school. We have an average of 18 children each and are full day with no para professionals. We get along very well and have the same teaching philosophies. I was wondering if anyone has experience in teaming in kindergarten. I would like to know your thoughts.

I team teach with my grade partner next door throughout the day. It works best if you know you work similarly, and you are both prepared to work at it - not let one do all the teaching and the other do all the background work.

We are separated by a wet area and computer room, so can't open our room up to be one large room... so we 'go next door' and are all in one room when we teach.

I like that we are not constantly in that state - so that if we want to be separated we can be - which means we are only together for part of the day - although usually do it nearly every day.

It's good to build a good team teaching relationship. It works REALLY well on days when you know your partner is having a bad day (for whatever reason - mine loses her voice quite often, for example) to take the pressure off each other if need be, but works THE BEST when you are both an integral part of the lesson.

I do like that I can say "no, I am going to finish off xxxx now, so we won't come in" and that's still okay. Or if my kids are particularly crazy today, we don't have to spread the crazy through all the kids, and we can stay in our room.

We teach the same lessons (same lesson plans) at generally the same time, except for when we have relief periods and the children go off to specialist teachers - which happens one class at a time... so it's easy to decide 'on the fly' whether to come together for a lesson, or to do it separately.

So I'm going to say, I like it.... but I like it if it's not a constant state of team teaching - but then I like my space in general anyway, and would find being with another adult ALL THE TIME a bit claustrophobic!
