Hi!

I have been asked to come up with a "music-making and hands-on" music program for grades 7 & 8 this summer to be implemented in Sept. 2013. Are there any ideas that you can share for this music class that I will teach twice a week for about 40 minutes each lesson? (Band and choir are taught at noon hour or after school by another teacher. Recorder and handbell playing are taught in grades 5 & 6. The school owns boomwhackers. We also have JamTrax, a computer program where the students compose rhythms.)

Note: I have piano playing experience.

Thank you so much

Any chance of getting guitars? Even one guitar for every two to three students. My classes just love playing and it's been a successful program.
You could also do some fun things with drum circles!

Is there a guitar book and/or drum book that you could recommend to guide the students? The school does not have any guitars, but with a request, some might be donated...

Thank you!

I was fortunate to receive two grants last year that I applied for. They enabled me to buy 14 guitars. I bought Yamaha guitars, mostly 1/2 sized in gig bags. (I hang them in my room by the handles of the gig bags. That way they are protected from dust and hands just dying to strum as they walk past.)
I used an Alfred book - cant recall they name offhand- and projected it with a document camera. Worked like a charm!
