Tandem Teaching in 3 Languages

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I work for a private elementary school in Madrid, Spain teaching 2 music classes a week in English. This upcoming year they've decided to add a 3rd music class but now one will be given in English, another in German and another in French. Each teacher will do songs in their respective language, but we have to divide/share the task of teaching music theory/history/etc. between us.

This will be a challenge seeing as the students are native Spanish speakers, their English level is intermediate, and their level in German and French is much lower (Novice).

Somehow we'll have to take the exisiting music curriculum and teach it between the three of us. Anyone have any experience tandem teaching music in more than one language?

Look into a curriculum like conversational solfege where you are teaching concepts thru the entire bod. Focus on the music(pitches and rhythms) not the words. Teach songs in all three languages that use the same concept. Have them move as much as possible with all of this.

The key is to focus on the concept, not the words. If they can sing and do it many ways that are familiar and unfamiliar then they know the concept and you can do this with very little talking.

Take a look at this page to have a better understanding.
