Chairs in a circle

Has anyone used chairs in a circle in the lower primary grades (Grade 2 to be specific)? I know kids are used to sitting on the floor, but I've recently been diagnosed with a type of arthritis and cannot sit on the floor which I know is important in Morning Meeting for everyone to be on the same level.

Just wondering if, with lots of modelling, Gr. 2 students can do this.

Thanks.

Hi there damarnfl,

What a dedicated RC practitioner you are!

I would think that you can use a chair while everyone sits on the ground if you are comfortable with that. If not, use the IM and give the chair circle a try. I am positive older children or teachers of youngers without carpeting must use chairs.

Good luck and let us know how it works out!

Thank you Mrs. R. I hate to do it (me sitting on a chair with them sitting on the floor), but maybe with a sharing about my condition (a simple one), they'll understand. Who knows?

If I see it becoming a problem, I'll look to IMing chairs to the circle.

I'd still like to hear from anyone who teaches younger grades and whether they are able to do this at this age.

Hi damarnfl,

I teach 5th grade and use chairs for Morning Meeting. I begin the year with interactive modeling, how to safely carry a chair, where to put the chairs when arriving, what gathering looks and sounds like. I use chairs because I find they fit better with my class size in the area I have for meetings. I also find that 5th graders behave better when they have their own space - no one touching.

I think with modeling and reminding you, too, could have students on chairs.

I taught second last year. We used chairs for morning meeting. Just teach the procedure. It'll work out just fine.
