They have a hard time figuring out the difference between work on writing and writing workshop.

I explained that in WonW what they write is their choice, and in WWorkshop I tell them what kind of writing to do (there will still be SOME choice, obviously, in WWksp)

Thoughts? What do you do to define the difference?

For me, WoW is free choice unless I tell them to write on something specific. I don't teach writing all the time, so formal writing only occurs every few weeks. There is some confusion- many of my students only hear about 75% of what is said.

I do writer's whshp separate and I don't want to confuse them when I introduce WonW. I think I'm going to make a chart listing the differences between the two.
