Christmas/December writing activity?

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am stumped for a writing activity for my 4th grade students to start the week after Thanksgiving. So far this year we've done narrative writing and expository writing, but I am open to anything.

The project I've done every year is a creative writing project where the students brainstorm jobs that Santa's elves would have. They they create an elf out of construction paper and write a story about what their job entails as one of Santa's elves. It's cute, but I've done it for almost 10 years now! I need a change.

So, tell me...what writing activity do you do with your students in December? Even if you teach a different level I may be able to adapt your ideas. Thanks so much!

The attached is what I do. I make it more of a family project, like the disguise a turkey project for November.

I love this idea! Thanks so much for sharing. I'd love to hear anyone else's ideas as well. My partner teacher was also looking for something, so I'd love to pass along a neat idea to her as well.

We wrote a mystery about a missing reindeer. We modeled it after the book "The Web Files" by Margie Palantini. They were very entertaining.

Eteach do you have any examples or rubrics or directions you might have gave the kids? That is a neat idea!

I do something similar to 1956BD... it's a three paragraph writing....1 gift for myself, 1 gift for my family and 1 gift for the world. They write a short paragraph about each gift.

I just told them to pretend they were a detective looking for one of Santa's reindeer. we made up a list of question they thought should be answered in the story and I let them write. I'll look for a student sample tomorrow and send it to you.
