is a lollipop tree too "primary" for 5th Grade?

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am moving from 1st to 5th this year, and I am trying to gather my ideas for rewards/positive reinforcement. I had lots of cute things in place for 1st grade, including a lollipop tree which I invested a lot of time in. I am trying to think of a way to make it more appropriate for 5th grade. Any ideas... It is basically a pot with a piece of pvc pipe cemented in it with a large styrofoam ball at the top, which I put suckers in.

Any ideas of something else I could stick in it that 5th graders would enjoy???

Thanks in advance!

I don't think the lollipop tree is too out of the realm of things for 5th graders. Shoot, I would have had 7th and 8th graders like the lollipop tree.

I wholeheartedly agree! My own 5th grader says he wants to be in your class.

I think it's super cute! Can we see a photo of your tree? I think I might want to borrow this idea if you don't mind.

I plan to make one for my fifth graders this year.

Beagles, here's a link to a blog that explains the lollipop tree: http://www.meetthedubiens.com/2011/0...ipop-tree.html

Love It! As they get older they don't get as many treats as the littles guys- they have outgrown stickers and trinkets. But, they always love candy! It makes them feel special and who doesn't like a sucker every now and then! You should see the reaction when we play bingo with Smarties.

Do you replace the lollipops that have been taken to make it look full year round? Do you have to use "Dum Dum" lollipops. (seems a little insulting) What would be reasons for the students to get to "pick" from the tree?

I do something similiar. I read the book Wayside School, and in the book, Mrs. Jewls, the teacher, has a coffee can on her desk with Tootsie Roll Pops in in it. I buy a box and fill it up so it looks like a tree when I get done. They love it. I have never met a 5th grader yet who doesn't like candy!

I give out lollipops to the kids all the time. They love it. I never thought of the tree idea. I think I will make one over the summer for next year. Thanks for the great idea.

I use it when...

I would just use it as a general reward. When I felt like a student needed to be rewarded, for whatever reason (following directions the first time, making 100% on a test, giving 110%, etc.) I would tell them they could go to the lollipop tree. I actually did not refill the tree as the suckers were gone. So it was pretty bare by the end of the year. I used Dum Dums because they are cheap. I am thinking of using a little "better" lollipops this year.

I teach 5th graders and they would LOVE LOVE LOVE this! Like another post said, at this age they don't get a lot of little treats. This will be perfect as a reward/incentive. Thanks again for Proteachers for a great idea!!

Around Halloween time they have bags of smaller lollipos that are about the size of a DumDum. I have gotten Tootsie Roll pops and others at this time. I love the fact they are smaller because then kids aren't walking around with a sucker in their mouth for 20 minutes. With the little pops it seems like they just chop down on it and it's done! Keeps me put of trouble with admin hehehe.

I think it's a great idea and will copy it for my students next year. Dum Dums are actually the only type of lollipop I like, so that will be what I get.

...as there are very few things fifth graders don't like. I've taught intermediate and middle school for many years and they all LOVE treats. I haven't had a lollipop tree for many years. You've inspired me to make a new one. Thanks!
Enjoy fifth grade. Get past the rolling eyes and drama and you'll see there's actually a sweet person in there that wants to be loved and accepted like your former third graders.

5th graders love treats and will work super hard to earn one! I have a candy prize once in a while for special things and I can't believe how hard they work for just a tiny piece of candy!
Awesome idea. Thanks for sharing.
You can always find suckers around each holiday if you wanted to change themes. Example: Easter Halloween...

Thanks for showing this! I will possibly be co-teaching at a new school this upcoming school year, I think I may make one of these for my co-teacher to help break the ice! If not, I will just make two for my students!
