1st day activities - art type?

Clip to ScrapBook #1

This is my first year trying RC and noticed that day 1 will be doing a lot of modeling of routines/procedures and I will be trying to incorporate Daily 5/cafe, too, on the first day. Does anyone have an art type activity/project that they do the first day, besides making name tags? I was just curious and not even sure if there would be enough time. I'm used to doing something kind of creative the first day, but certainly don't have to. Thanks for your help.

I'm trying something new this year so it might totally tank, but we're going to use scrapbook paper, jewels, etc to make a birthday "cupcake" to hang on the wall.

Maybe an art piece building on community and the classroom as a community.

I have done a big puzzle. Where each child gets a puzzle piece to write their name on and decorate. Then you put them all together and talk about how they fit all together and we need every piece to make it work. Talk about the community of the classroom etc.

That would be fun! I could make a large 8 for our room and cut it into puzzle type pieces. That way, they are doing more than interactive modeling all day. Do you have the kids make their name tags in the morning, or do you have them pre-made? When I taught 4th, (I'm in 2nd this year) I often made a classroom quilt from register tape. I suppose I could do that still. (?) The only drawback is that is takes up a lot of space.

I dont even do name tags. My kids are all coming up together from the same kinder class with the addition of about 2 new kids.

I have them make books marks for their Books bins for D5.

guided discovery

I've done the puzzle before - we do it after our guided discovery of Elmer's glue (I teach kinder). Another project to do after the GD of glue is to make name cards. I take long pieces of cardboard (cardstock would work too) & I write the child's name in black sharpie. Then they take pebbles (and a few sparkly jewels) and glue them over the letters. I can go around & observe their use of glue AND talk about the letters in their names (win-win for me )

Thank you for the ideas. I teach 2nd grade and maybe the book mark would be a great idea to put in their book boxes. I think I need something simple, since both RC and Daily 5 will be new for me! I'm not sure yet if I'll make name tags.

Kids who join the class after the first day

I noticed this is a pretty old thread but since there's not much on this board it was on the first page, so I have a question about the puzzle idea.
What do you do about kids who join the class a few days in?
Leave a few blank ones just in case, or take it down at that point, or... ?
I really like this project but just wasn't sure how to make it work when new kids come. Or even if you have extras on the first day that you hadn't planned on but already have the pieces cut.
