I am a primary grade teacher with a definite philosophy. I am a graduate of Bank Street, which is a very progressive Education grad school in NYC. I believe in the developmental interaction approach - which is exactly what it sounds like. SImply put - We need to teach things in a manner that in developmentally appropriate and encourages interactin with peers, adults and materials. I use a workshop model for RW and WW.

I have great ideas that never quite go through. I find myself yelling more than I care to admit. I know/feel that classroom management is a weakness, I have poor follow through and lots of fooling around.I really want a strong classroom community where kids are taking responsibility and feeling part of a group of learners. I know I can improve because I know overall my kids are really happy and grow. I just really want to reach the next level.

Could this approach help me develop a stronger classroom community and better management? I noticed some teacher on the UofS and Miller boards are here, which gives me hope. I have read work by Ruth Charney before - I think she is involved.
Thoughts? Ideas for me?

Hi thebeach16!

The Responsive Classroom Approach is a researched-based approach to teaching. It emphasizes the teaching of social, emotional and academic skills in tandem. The ultimate goal is a strong community that encourages and supports academic growth.

Please visit the RC Website and explore. There you can find a timeline, Board of Directors, and much more information. You will also be able to explore the principles and strategies that are taught through the approach. There is also video of "RC in action".

Let us know if you have questions. Happy exploring!
