When reading the first six weeks it talks about a bathroom symbol?? The students are to use to show where they are. Can anyone explain what they use in their classroom?
Thanks for clearing up confusion.

I have two clipboards by the door one for girls another for boys. One side of the clipboard is labeled IN the other side OUt The children's names are written on a clothes pin (both sides of the pin) and clipped down the length of the IN side. When they use the washroom they move their pin and put it back when they return. I also taught them to use the sign language symbol "t" for toilet so they don't have to interrupt me when asking, they catch my eye use the symbol and then I nod or gesture them to wait. I have also read on some posts where the teacher has a decorated rock that is put on the child's desk while they are out.

I have beaded keychains (one says Girls, one says Boys). The kids put it on their desk if they are in the washroom. We also use the ASL sign for 'toilet'.

I personally don't like the idea of having to signal when I have to use the bathroom, so I won't ask my students to do it either. We talk about "when" it's appropriate to use the bathroom while we're going over expectations and procedures. If it's work time and they have to use it, I have two folders that hang by the door. They quietly place one on their desk. That way, I can mentally track who's using the bathroom. If I see a pattern or problem, we talk about the expectation and have them figure out a solution. Usually it takes only one conference about it.
