Clip to ScrapBook #1

We started school last week and we are working on building stamina with read to self. Finally got up to 11 minutes. My question is, how do I do assessments? I can't do them during RTS because I have to keep things quiet and keep my eyes on them. I've got to get them going - how do you do it?

Read to Self. Then eventually move on to Read to Someone, Word Work, Work on Writing, and Listen to Reading (does not have to be in this order though). For me (I teach 5th grade) my students just had their DIBELS testing completed and soon I will begin using that data to help guide me. Your main goal should be to first get your students doing the D5 because this is the structure that will allow you to teach the CAFE strategies and to assess your students in small groups. I hope this makes sense? Good luck!

did you introduce? My kids are pretty solid with read to self. I just started writer's workshop and I don't want to confuse them by introducing work on writing now too. Maybe I should introduce word work? I am only doing those 3.

Are you saying you don't do any initial assessments until all phases of D5 have been introduced? Is that when you did your dibels assessment? I've always done assessment the first week of school so I can plan groups. Not with D5?

We don't do assessments until at least the 2nd or 3rd week of school. By then my kids were up to enough stamina that I could get 1 or maybe 2 kids done at a time while they did read to self. After read to self, I introduced word work, work on writing, listen to reading, and just now I'm introducing read to someone.

Jule, if you're up to 11 min. you should be able to squeeze in 1-3 assessments. How many rounds of RtoS are you doing to build stamina? If you're doing 2 at 11 min. each, that should give you some time to do assessments.
