I want to include a vocab. section in my Reader's notebook, but I'm not sure exactly what I want the kids to do. I have words from the basal each week, and I think I may have them find words in their independent reading book as well. Any ideas?

I make word and definition cards. We glue the definitions next to the correct words in our spirals. This becomes their study guide for the week to learn the new words.

I make some extra cards as well and have them cut out so they can use them as a center and match them up from memory without looking at their spirals.

Then I create crossword puzzles using the definitions as the clues. I use Discovery Education's free crisscross puzzles.

I play a swat game with them using fly swatters to practice the meaning of the words.

They have to write sentences and use each word in its own sentence.

I write fill in the blank sentences for their assessment. They use a word bank.

We are learning 10 words a week. Sometimes the list comes from our literature. Other times they may be a list of math, science or social studies words.

Here are example cards.

Someone else shared this earlier on PT. I bought a cute set of magnet flies and fly swatters from Really Good Stuff for $5.99 to play this game on the chalkboard. However, you could easily make your own.

Rockin' Words

We just had a section called "rockin words" where kids would write words from their stories that they thought were cool for whatever reason. Then they would write the definition (either from a dictionary or context) and/or use it in a sentence. I also had them write phrases that they liked the sound of to use later in their writing. Sometimes they chose words from here as part of their weekly spelling list as well.
