I'm curious. With all these budget cuts everywhere, how many students will you have in your class next year. Please include what grade you teach if you don't mind and if you'll have a second teacher or teacher's assistant at any point during the day.

I'll be teaching a 3rd grade Gifted and Talented class and will have 32 students. Many of my students are twice exceptional, so may have ADD, ADHD, Aspergers, OCD. However, my school doesn't tend to recognize these disorders that often come with gifted children and therefore I have these 32 students all day, alone.

-2nd grade
-22 students (as of right now)
-4 with IEP's (I should have a SPED teacher or aide in my classroom most of the time, because of the needs of these students)

Our caps went up from 25 to 28 this year due to budget cuts. Right now I have 24, but school is still a month off. I'm in second.

I'm not sure of the exact numbers but it should be around 18-22.
Our K-grade 1 numbers are always lower. Second grade is usually upper 20s and 3-5 is usually 30 or more.

I had 28 last year, there were two teachers in my grade level. We got a third teacher this year and we are currently at 17-19. The grade level that went down to two teachers will each have ~26. Due to budget cuts we lost one classroom teacher, and the P decides where that will occur.

Usually, 26-29 in my regular ed. classroom (4th) is the norm, but this year, I am changing schools and grade levels. I will be going from a crowded school where I taught with 7 others on my team to the smallest school in the system, where I will enjoy 17 in my 5th grade class and be the only teacher on my grade level!!!

30-32 first graders; no aides and very little help from parents. Before our budget problems here in CA, we had 20-1 for math and lang arts only...so at least we were used to having 30 kids for half the day.

31 third graders with just me.

BTW-who decides that the cap should be an odd number? It drives me crazy. It messes up making partners, making a bulletin board, and buying things that come in packs. It doesn't seem like it would break the budget to have capped us at 30...But that's just my opinion of course.

Pray for me! It's funny how we make it, but God is good! It truly doesn't feel too bad because I am used to it, AND after eleven years in banking, not even sure if I'd make it through school to even become a teacher, all I can say is hallelujah!

Second grade here. As of right now, I have 20 on my list (teaching partners have 18 and 19). Four of them are on IEPs for cognitive disabilities, one comes with a para attached. Three others are ELL. Of course, those are just the ones who are identified.

Compared to others on this thread, I'm feeling fortunate.

Right now I am at 22. None of those have an IEP at this time.
I will have a reading teacher for 1/2 hour during reading block.
She will also come for about 20 minutes a day for math. I am glad to have that much help in my room.

Half day Kindergarten- 22 in each class, although they may open another class and then my numbers would go down to about 15 in each.

I will have some kind of assistance because I will have a student with Down Syndrome and one who is blind, so there will be someone to work with those kids.

35 students (last year)
Mixed abilities, IEP's, many ELL's
No aid, no library, no computer lab, no PE teacher

Not sure for this year, but will be the same, if not more students. Last year, several teachers had 40 in their class. What is really sad, is this is for ALL classes (K-8).

I'm in Texas where there is a cap for k-4 of 22 students. Last year we had 27 students in each class with a total of 16 sped kids. The team across from me had 13 sped kids between them where we only had 3. I won't know how many kids until the week before school starts since they keep it a big mystery who you get. I'm waiting to hear about an IST job where I wouldn't have a specific class. I hope I get it since I work in a stressful situation.

is departmentalized 5th & 6th grade. The GenEd reading teachers have about 25 students per class, and we teach 5 sections per day. My program is an intervention class, so my numbers are smaller. I have 4 sections of SpEd students & 1 of GenEd (although most of them are in the RtI process.) My class size is limited to 8, and no paras. The admins would like for me to have larger classes, but that would require placing me in a larger room & installing more computers, which isn't feasible at this point.

No teacher's aide. I usually get a student teacher each semester, but that doesn't always equal help.

I work at a public charter school. All of our elementary school classes cap at 22 and our middle school classes cap at 26. I appreciate how lucky I am to have such a small class size... Although I still wish our classrooms weren't so teeny-tiny!

We don't usually get any aides or anything, unless we have some pretty high needs students. I won't know the make up of my class until we begin inservices.

Most years I was between 18 and 25 per class. I'd have the odd group of up to 32, but that was unusual. Last year all of my classes were 35. Ugh.

This year my rosters are 25-29 per class.

19 one SPED w/ para, 1 IEP.
There are five of us this year in Second grade. I'm in next in line for the new ones. We started three weeks ago so am expecting more to show up soon as people move into the area and realize that we have started school already.Rest of the school districts in the area don't go back until the second week in August.

1st Grade
19 Students
Southern CA

I have an aide for an hour every morning (during centers.)

My class size is NOT normal for my area. I student taught in 6th grade with 34 and 2nd with 32, both with no aides of any kind. THOSE numbers are totally normal for most of CA. I am at a charter school that keeps classes at 21 or less in K-3 and 24 or less in 4-5. It's wonderful.

I am totally shocked by some teachers having 35=40 students!!!! How dare (The powers that be ) talk about testing scores and accountability when stacking the children into class with that many students. There seems to be a growth in dropping or ignoring the previous yeasr gains with regard to class size.
Did you also notice that each year we get students to meet the requirements that the expectations rise???? I realize that economy is down; but good lord these children will be running the world. How can one person possibly keep up with ... sorry venting, How large is the classroom that allows 54 students in one room,,,,,,,,,

17-20 depending on the class- fifth grade

many of our current governors and representatives (including Romney) feel that we will be great teachers no matter how many students... stay informed and remember to vote for teacher & student friendly candidates!

I have 6 students starting at the begining of this year.
I teach 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade in a rural farming community.
Last year I started off with 6 and went up and down between 3-6

I am teaching 3rd grade this year, 18 students.

I am in Florida and we have the class size amendment, K-3 can only have 18 students and 4-5 can only have up to 22.

Oh, I also have 3 IEP's and 4 retentions (2 of the IEP kiddos are also retentions) and our school is 75% ESOL (ELL).

Then it was decided a week before school began that we should have two sections instead of 3 and now I have 26 (I was supposed to have 28, but 2 moved.)

The district laid off all (over 4000) teachers and is still figuring out assignments, so I can't say for this year, but I heard the first grades were large last year and they were expecting similar sizes for 2nd grade this year. Large generally means 32-38 or so.

Two years ago, I ranged between 33 and 36 and had five resource room (two were CI, one was ASD/OCD/Aspergers/LD, two were LD/ADHD, one was LD/EI). I also had two other ADHD and two with severe behavior disorders. No aide. No other teacher. I was tired.

This past year I tried a change and taught a 'special'. The classes were:

Three 1st grades of about 20 (but only two classes which grew to 40 before the Oct change) with good aides
Two 2nd grades which were 36-40 the whole year (one w/no aide, one with a disruptive aide)
Two 3rd grades 24-28 -- no aides
Two 4th grades 26-32 -- no aides
Two 5th grades 25-31 -- no aides
Two 6th grades -- about 30 each, but we had one class of 50-60 all Sept. & 1/2 of Oct
Two 7th grades -- about 28 each, but we had one class of 50-60 all Sept. & Oct
Two 8th grades -- about 27 each, but we had one class of 50-60 all Sept. & Oct

To me, these are the things that occur when you have business folks (like our governor appointed and over-empowered Emergency Manager) instead of educaters making all of the decisions for a school district. JMHO

So many of our core classes are approaching 40 in middle school, non-supported. Another teacher in my building has 42 in her language arts class and there are classes of 40 in the science labs. I don't know how we are expected to teach!

With our numbers at the end of last school year, I was going to have 22 students (Grade 1/2), with two IEPs. We go back the first week of September. When we will see what new students registered over the summer and who shows up on the first day, our numbers could change. I could easily have 24 students - most likely no more than that though.

First week of school done. Current Kindergarten rooms (4 all day sections) are near or passed 30. 1 room has 32 another 31, others are getting close. Aides were hired for each room the day before school started. Poor teachers are going crazy!

We are waiting for the "post-1st week of school: oh, did school start?" registration group we typically have. We have highest transient numbers in our county as we are rural (farmers) & many families are farm laborers.

Third grade (my area) has about 24 students in each of 4 rooms, with similar numbers in other grades currently. We typically expect numbers to get near 30 per room, and we work without aides.

I am in Florida as well where I am not allowed to have more than 18 students in my 2nd grade classroom. As of right now, (one week into the school year) I have 16 students on my roster. On Monday I started with 14 students in my class and gained two more by Thursday.
