Help!

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hi everyone! I am in my third year of teaching, and after two years of fifth grade math, I was moved to 7th and 8th grade, and an algebra group.

My problem is that half of my algebra group goes to the high school in the morning for an algebra class, and then I have them again the last peirod of the day. So i teach half of the students and a high school teacher teaches half. Then they all come together for a second math period at the end of the day. With this situation, the half that goes to algebra is graded by that teacher, and not me. I cannot give them a grade, even for that second period.

I need ways to keep these kids engaged! My admin suggested projects that last a while, and then it will be easier to pull students who need extra help. However, the students know they aren't being graded by me, so they think "why try?"

Help! I need ideas!!!! I am also going to post this on a high school thread!

Thanks!!!

Can you collaborate with the HS teacher?

Or use it for a homework help period?

Maybe the HS teacher would have ideas for enrichment. Is it just 8th graders that go or is it a mixed class? I'm thinking peer tutors?

Sounds like a bizarre situation.

I am collaborating with the HS teacher so we are covering the same material.
She hasn't given any thoughts for enrichment in the past, so I doubt she will have any ideas this year! I am planning to do some projects that will keep their attention and engaged during the period. I just have been looking for some project ideas.
