Another special Ed teacher bites the dust--ME!

I teach resource and have had huge caseloads the past few years. Last year just about did me in! Additional 1/2 time person was hired this year for support--finally some relief! Too good to be true.......always is! Now the powers that be have decided that we need to share a day of our FTE. We were OK with that until I was told that it would be me that had to go to a second school another day a week because my schedule was more "flexible". So the payback for finally getting a decent caseload is that I now have two schools, have to cram my Monday resource minutes into Tu-Fri. I get to case manage five students that I will see once a week plus work with an additional 25 students one day a week.

Believe me I have done everything short of begging to be allowed to stay at my school all week. Union can't help because of contract language. So my 10 hour days and first in last out on many days has really paid off!! Can you tell I'm a wee bit bitter.....

Ugh that sounds horrible! So sorry you are dealing with this. Can't think of any brilliant advice, but I would be furious!

Thanks Haley. I'm pretty sure that this will be my last year. Wanna job in the Pacific Northwest?

I'm really sorry. That sounds like a crappy thing my district would do.

Two schools

My district does this to elementary resource teachers all the time.

It really messes with the relationships to gen ed teachers and often these traveling teachers do not get their own space at each school.

Also, numbers fluctuate over the summer and you could come back to find you have an additional school on your case load.

So sorry this is happening to you.

Wow. Thatís a crappy situation. Through my own experiences, and reading some on this board, Iím beginning to think sped teachers are dumped on.

I'm increasingly of the opinion that SPED teachers (and paras) need to be paid much higher than their peers or, at the very least, paid some kind of stipend for being willing to work SPED. There is just so much more that you are expected to deal with than the normal GENED teachers and if coaches can get a stipend, why not? Then they wonder why SPED teachers don't stick around long......
