How do I get around this ...

I'm interested in another job in a neighboring district. My potential new employer is asking for a reference, but I'm not a fan of having my principal know that I'm on the hunt for a new job. How do I go about this? I'm sure there are others in this exact situation. I'd love to hear how you navigate this sticky situation.

I'd let the potential new school know that they contact your P, but only if you're the final candidate and it's the last step prior to making a job offer. Ask them to let you know if this is the case so you can be the one to tell your P. If it doesn't pan out, no one will have contacted your P and he doesn't need to know you were looking. Provide them with other references that they can call first if they'd like. Last time I was job hunting I interviewed with plenty of schools that were totally fine with this set up- some even offered it to me without me having to ask.

I didn't think of that option. Good to hear what others have done, thanks.

but only because I'm moving at the end of the year, and definitely will not be able to commit to another year at my present school. I didn't want to surprise my current P when she received a phone call. I surprised a principal from years ago, and vowed to never do that again. It worked out in my favor, but I felt like a creep when she approached me later, and I respected and adored that principal immensely.
